John Ford understood the idea of the beauty and the beast. He tried to convey the harshness of the land as well as the beauty. In Monument Valley he avoided the temptation to shoot nothing but breathtaking scenery. He had only an occasional beauty shot. They were like diamonds, valuable because they are rare.
